Stay Tuned More Tour 2013 Photos and Stories to Come

Guy and I are gradually adjusting to our other life, here at home. All the animals are great and the garden is incredible. The tomato plants survived the 30 degree cold snap and are thigh high. We have about a billion strawberries and the beans and peas will be ready any day. Everything looks great. GIANT thank you to all our friends who looked after our home while we were away.

I actually drove to the grocery store last night. Luckily the truck was last in the driveway — it is old and slow. I will have to build up to the 5 speed stick shift car. Many, many things are weird or fast or incongruous after living on a bicycle for three weeks.

We have many more photos to share. This one is a nearly complete panorama from Holmes County Road 6. This is the road route between Killbuck and Danville. I hope you get a feel for the wide open, on the ridge top, giant rolling hills and perfection. Everywhere you look is scenic.

The photo on the left is looking behind at the hill we just climbed, then then view across the road and the next set of hills up ahead.

Holmes County Road 6, looking back and ahead.

The Demise of the Cotton Stingray

Steve, thanks for the good advice! I snuck up on it while it was sleeping. They sleep with their eyes open, did you know that?
Anyway, I took care of him and was able to get a shower. Thanks!

Day 24: Home Again

Hello All! We are home again! Not sure how we feel about that yet, but I think we’ll be posting a summary/follow-up blog once we digest the whole thing.
I do know this, though; we have wonderful friends.

Last night we had a wonderful dinner at one of our advertisers, Kozmo,’s Grille. We had bacon wrapped scallops for an appetizer, really good beers on tap (Thirsty Dog and Great Lakes) and pasta for dinner. We had our leftovers for our first breakfast in the morning.
I loves me some Leg Humper!

Today we left Massillon in the rain, headed for the CVSR train station in Akron. By taking the train, we get home a day earlier, but sadly miss that 1000 mile mark because of it. Oh well. 957 miles is plenty good for me :-)
On the way out of town, we stopped at Ernie’s Bike Shop to get a back up tube. Leaving there, Carolyn found a story about us posted at the next trail head kiosk.

20130613-203512.jpg
It was the story from the Massillon Independent.

20130613-203637.jpg
We kept on riding trying to get to the train. The trail was really a mess, but it was very apparent that trail maintenance was performed right after the storm in the early morning hours. Way to go all of you trail maintenance people out there! Our bike got pretty dirty anyway.

20130613-203958.jpg
We just made the train in Akron. It was a relief to know we were on board and could relax. We got a sandwich and a beer from the dining car.

20130613-204153.jpg
After we detrained at Rockside Road, we still had about 15 more miles to ride to get home in some of the fiercest headwinds of our entire trip. I did manage to get this awesome photo of a CSX local skipping across the valley. Carolyn wave and the engineer actually saw her and tooted and rang the bell :-)

20130613-204504.jpg
We got home around 6 pm, I think. Our cats were very happy to see us, especially Gilley!

Day 24: On the Train

We rode through the rain this morning and made it to the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad station. We are now on board and in route.

Day 24: We Will Be Home Today!

Wow! It stormed all night. Wild lightning, thunder, wind and it knocked the power out. A great night to be in a giant concrete building!
We are headed to Akron to catch the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. They encourage bicycling and they will take us and our bikes 40 miles for $3 each.
We will detrain at Rockside Road then we will pedal the last 15 miles home.
Trying to get out of here with some extra time in case the trail is damaged from the storms.
We both have mixed feelings–sad that this grand trip is over but sick of the road food and looking forward to seeing our family, friends, pets and garden.
I plan to sleep for a couple of days.

Day 23: Return to Massillon

So we woke up early today to get a head start on the weather. Carolyn’s rear tire on her bike held air over night. I was delighted! So we packed our bags, saddled up and headed out. We were down the Holmes County Trail and into Fredricksburg by 10:30.

20130612-175531.jpg
We stopped at Lem’s, but it was too early to get food from them, so Carol went across the street to the grocery store and got three little chicken sandwiches and some grapes for our road ride section coming up.

20130612-175834.jpg
The route is easier riding south to north, but it’s still not easy. Lots of rolling hills through Amish country.

20130612-180039.jpg
We went passed Amish farm after Amish farm.

20130612-180204.jpg
I think today was laundry day. Almost every farm had a clothes line out.

20130612-180326.jpg
In Dalton (pronounced Dowton, by the inhabitants), we again stopped at the Dairyette for ice cream.

20130612-180550.jpg
It was so humid today! Riding the Sippo Valley Trail was like riding through the jungle.

20130612-180705.jpg
The Sippo is the hard luck child of the trail system. It seems there’s always a sink hole, our a bridge fire, or a bridge gets washed out…

20130612-180944.jpg
We made it across anyway.

20130612-181029.jpg
Finally, we are in Massillon, ahead of the predicted storms. We stopped at the drive through for some Great Lakes Burning Rivers before we head up the street to our hotel.

20130612-181252.jpg
We’re really glad to be here, but now I’m afraid to take a shower…
