Bob, Molly and Joe Touring with The IGotABike Ohio To Erie Trail Guide

Guy and I recently received an e-mail from one of our trail guide customers. Bob wrote to us to tell us that he had purchased our trail guide and then rode the full length of the Ohio to Erie Trail. We were thrilled to hear from him. We love getting feedback on the trail guide and hearing stories of adventure from the trail. They told us that they really liked the coffee house in Killbuck so we added it to version 2 of the trail guide. They stayed at a really neat B&B about 12 miles north of Fredericksburg. It is a log home home built in 1820’s. We will definitely check it out to see if it is a practical destination to recommend while touring on the Ohio To Erie Trail. If you are planning a tour or have already ridden the Ohio To Erie Trail please shoot us e-mail. carolandguy@igotabike.com
He is some of what Bob wrote:
“We recently rode the trail south to north and really enjoyed the trip. Your guide was very helpful both in preparing for the trip and during the ride. There were three of us, myself, my wife Molly and our friend Joe. We stayed in B&Bs, so we only carried minimal change of cloths, light jackets and bike supplies. We did it in four days, averaging about 85 miles a day.”

Westerville Bike Path Has a Short Detour until 2014

A section of Westerville Bike Path closed this week until summer 2014. They are constructing a bicycle bridge to carry the bike path over County Line Road. This was a four lane wide difficult crossing with no lights. The detour is simple. IGotaBike friend, David Roseman,  peddled over there to check it out. He reports that the detour is well signed and easy to follow.

I Got A Bike Trail Guide featured in Columbus Messenger: August 2, 2013

Carol Lewis Cocchiarale (right) shows the new “IGotABike Ohio To Erie Trail Guide” to members of the Friends of Madison County Parks and Trails: (from left) Yung Holt, Danny Holt and Gene Pass.

New Guide Helps Cyclists Get on Their Bikes and Ride.

London is among the towns featured on a new interactive trail guide for the Ohio To Erie Trail, a 300-mile biking/walking path that runs between Cleveland and Cincinnati.
The 51-page guide comes in the form of a PDF that can be downloaded to a tablet or smartphone. Once downloaded, the guide can be used without Internet access. It features mileage charts between towns, navigation guides and recommendations on where to stay, eat and visit along the trail.

The guide is the work of Carolyn Lewis Cocchiarale and Guy Cocchiarale, cycling enthusiasts from Cleveland. They embarked on the trail guide project a year ago, after their blog about the trail, IGotABike.com, took off.

“The Ohio To Erie Trail Fund is busy building the trail, getting signage and getting infrastructure, but there was nothing in place to help people navigate the trail,” said Carolyn. “So, Guy and I did a blog and it was really popular. We had people from all over the country asking us for advice on navigating the trail. The guide grew out of that.”
Last May, Carolyn and Guy biked the entire length of the trail, collecting information to create the guide. They said their stop in London stood out among the others due to the organized support the trail enjoys locally. Playing a huge part in that support is the non-profit Friends of Madison County Parks and Trails.

This May and June, Carolyn and Guy rode the entire trail again to promote the completed guide and collect more information for updates. Again, they enjoyed London’s interest and hospitality.

“It was around June 3. We were headed northbound toward London, and Gene Pass and two others came looking for us. Gene was wearing one of our t-shirts when he caught up with us. They ended up riding 100 miles by the time they were done,” Carolyn said.
Pass is a charter member of the Friends of Madison County Parks and Trails (FMCPT). He was among 13 FMCPT members who rode the entire Ohio To Erie Trail, from Cincinnati to Cleveland, last fall. Carolyn and Guy guided the group the last few miles through Cleveland, so Pass decided to return the hospitality when Carolyn and Guy made their return trip through London. He and fellow FMCPT members, Danny Holt and Yung Holt, greeted the IGotABike couple and got a look at the new guide.

London’s portion of the guide includes information about the two trailheads, the Prairie Grass trailhead on West High Street behind the Madison County Senior Center and the Roberts Pass trailhead on Maple Street near Center Street. For more information about the portion of the trail that runs through London and Madison County, go to www.fmcpt.com.

The IGotABike Ohio To Erie Trail Guide is $14.99. To purchase a copy, go to www.IGotABike.com.

On Sept. 15, 2012, Carol Lewis and Guy Cocchiarale of IGotaBike.com escorted 13 riders from the Friends of Madison County Parks and Trails to Edgewater Park to “tire dip” in Lake Erie. Five days earlier, the group started their trek in Cincinnati, where they dipped their tires in the Ohio River. It was all part of their journey on the 300-mile Ohio To Erie Trail.

DIY Bucket Panniers Update

Judging by the amount of traffic we get, there seems to be a lot of interest in our blog entry about miss Sarah’s homemade bucket panniers. I love the idea myself and really would like to make some for urban riding where I just need to chuck stuff somewhere. ( I really want to build an entire urban assault bicycle, but that’s another blog entry 😉 )
Anyway, I have come across some more information that may be helpful to those of you that are actually making some. First of all, I found this small company on the web that sells the mounting hardware in a kit. http://www.thebikebucket.com/
They sell the buckets, too.
I also found a good source for buckets at reasonable prices, US Plastics. The neat thing is that they come in a variety of colors; green white, red, black, yellow, etc. The other cool thing is that they are food-grade (look for HDPE, or high-density polyethylene). I just recently purchased blue 5 gallon buckets from them for water storage.
Now, I would think that half of the reason you would want plastic bucket panniers would be to keep your stuff dry, right? But prying off those plastic lids is a real PITA. Enter the Gamma Seal Lid! US Plastics has them and they also come in various colors as well. What it is is a plastic ring that snaps onto the top of the bucket. The inside of the ring is threaded and the actual lid screws down into it. It has a built in rubber gasket. I have a couple of these that I use to store pet food and other supplies. Works great, if a tad pricey. Awesome invention.
Other ideas; US Plastics has all kinds of buckets, including square ones with hinged fold-open lids. They also have smaller 1 and 2 gallon buckets (gamma seals may not fit these) that might be better for front panniers. And if you really need to haul a big load, they have 6 and 7 gallon buckets!
Another source for cheap buckets and Gamma Seals is Home Depot. Their buckets are orange with their logo, but if you don’t care, you can get a bucket/Gamma Seal combo for about $12.
So there you have it, a roundup on bucket panniers. If any of you have built any, drop me a line with some pics…

The Wabash Cannonball Trail

This past week, Carolyn and I rode the Wabash Cannonball Trail. It’s in northwest Ohio, near Toledo. They say its a 63 mile mile trail, that’s why we went there. We found out, though, that not all of it is paved. You can, however, make a very nice 25 mile loop ride using a very pleasant road route to connect two sections of trail, the North Route and the South Route. The trail is kind of shaped like an arrow pointing east. The road route we found connects the two on the west end.
The trail is very smooth and level, as it’s a rail trail. The road route is also smooth and nearly level. It’s almost like a super wide bike path!
After riding it, we found that it would be best to ride the southern section first, across the road route and then return on the northern leg. This way the ever so slight elevation changes go in your favor, as well as having the wind at your back towards the end of the ride.
This could be a cool trail for your first overnight trip, as there is a campground at the half way point.
We will be putting out a special short edition Trail Guide for this trail very soon! Watch for it…

Honored to Escort the 2013 Honor Ride Ohio

Back in June when we were still on our 2013 Ohio to Erie Trail tour we received an e-mail from Todd Reigle. He had just purchased the IGotaBike Ohio to Erie Trail Guide in preparation for the 2013 Honor Ride Ohio. Todd was very happy to have the Trail Guide as he was pretty swamped in the details and logistics of the ride.
In 2012 Todd founded Honor Ride Ohio to raise funds to support veterans. This year he and five military members were riding the Ohio to Erie Trail with a goal to raise $30,000. Of course Guy and I were very enthused by the project and stayed in touch with Todd answering questions and providing detailed descriptions of the route. They planned to ride the 300+ miles in four days riding north to south beginning on July 4th in Cleveland.
We made it a point to be available to escort them from downtown Cleveland to the trailhead at Harvard Road. It was a humbling experience and we were moved by the dedication of these people and their families. We were escorting the Honor Ride but we felt like we were the ones who experienced honor. It was a privilege to ride with them. And it was fun! When we arrived at the trailhead we kept riding and ended up tagging along to Rockside Road where we reluctantly turned back. It was a terrific way to celebrate Independence Day.
The riders,  Matt Miller (USMC), Adriene Corna (Ohio National Guard), Mick Karp (Army), Aaron Strange (Army) and Lt. Colonel Matt Leach (Army) and Todd Reigle arrived in Cincinnati as planned on July 7th. They had a lot of rain but enjoyed the trails anyway.

The Cleveland Velodrome: A Night at the Races!

The Cleveland Velodrome: A Night at the Races!

Last night (7/18/13), Carolyn and I went to the races at the Cleveland Velodrome.
If you haven’t been there yet, you really should check it out. It’s a very laid back and friendly atmosphere. See their website for racing and training schedules. There is something going on there nearly every night. They also have track bikes to rent and will teach ANYONE how to race, including kids. So if you have the slightest inkling….
Anyway, we thoroughly enjoyed the evening. We stood on the observation platform on the front straight. It’s a great vantage point. You can also stand on the back stretch, or hang out in the infield with all the racers if that’s more your speed.
Speaking of speed, some of the races exceeded speeds of 30 mph! I don’t know about you, but Carol and I only hit those speeds on major downhills!
The rules are fairly straight forward and simple to understand. If you have a question, any of the racers are more than happy to answer it for you.
The Velodrome is easy to get to. It’s just a few minutes south of downtown Cleveland on Broadway Road at Pershing (E49th). Plenty of free parking inside the fence.
