Safe and sound at Westerville/Polaris North of Columbus

The title says it all. We only made 25 miles today, but we got a lot accomplished. We are now in a two room suite at Best Western. We have a large front room with a couch and a TV, microwave and fridge. The bikes are parked there. Then we have a sort of dressing room with the sink. The bathroom is off of that. The back room is the bedroom with its own TV and a king size bed.
It’s regularly $119.
Carol had a coupon for $74 :-)

After my shower, I will post some pictures of our busy day, filled with repairs, shopping, and some really cool Gratuitous Train Pic of the Day©

Columbus Repairs!

Hello World!
We are now in Columbus. It’s been a long and twisted tale;
We stayed at the Alexandra B&B last night. We had dinner at Rothwells. We met some people there that were mutual friends of Mike at London Peddler (is there anybody that he doesn’t know?). So we meet Chris Stewart. Said he’s got an suv and he works in Columbus and he’ll take us in the morning! What a guy! Thanks a ton, Chris!!! Thank God for the Marines!

So now, Carol’s bike is in the trusted and capable hands of Dave at Baer Wheels. He is completely rebuilding it with More Beef!

So now, we will have a half a day left to ride. We will be shooting for Sunbury.
Carol is pointing it out :-)

How’s that Tim?

Oh, by the way… We were interviewed by another newspaper yesterday, The Madison Messenger, reporter Kristy Zurbrick. It was right when Carol’s wheel blew up!

The Most Salaciously Gratuitous Train Pics of the Day!

Oh dear me! Be still my heart!
As far as I can tell, we have here a very old Alco SW-1??? This thing has been through the wringer and is slightly modified. Notice the add on radiator at the front.

Words cannot express…

And now for your consideration, may I present what, iirc, is an EMD GP-7! Notice the rounded cab.

And it just looks funny enough to me to think that it’s a high nose to low nose conversion in some back alley shop! This thing could be from 1949!!!

From the same site…

Breakdown Update

OK!
We’re at the friendly neighborhood Alexandra B & B. Looks like we’ll be here the night and get a fresh start in the morning.
Many many thanks to our friend (and fellow hop-head) Paul from Fairview Cycle, all the way back home in Cleveland! He got a Jamis rep working on the case for us, and hopefully we’ll be back on the road tomorrow. We were having no luck on our own and called Paul, just for some advice and he totally hooked is up. Everybody else was off today or out of town. Thanks Paul!

Jamis breakdown #2, London Ohio

Carol’s brand new JAMIS Aurora just crapped out again. Three spokes this time! Her 20 spoke non-eyeletted Giant did three tours and never broke a single spoke. Same load.
I’m not too happy right now.
We’re stuck in London and the nearest bike shop is in Columbus.

Monday’s Blog (yesterday 6/4)

Yesterday was mostly a really fun ride. Nice cool weather and scenic views. We felt like kids, rolling slowly along the shady trails.
Here we are leaving our beloved KOA

It was pretty windy most of the day. Check out that giant flag in the distance! US40 by Dayton International Airport.

Here’s a self portrait at the trail head in Taylorsville park

Did I mention we felt like kids?

Here’s a shot of the bike trail bridge coming into Dayton.

We also stopped in the park to eat and watch an inning of some good little league ball

Cedarville

52 1/2 miles today. Getting to be a regular thing.
We are safe and sound in the Hearthstone Inn (review) in Cedarville, state route 42 and route 72. We’re right on the bike trail.
Shower and food. More info later, including a review of the hotel (hint- its nice!)

Edit- news flash! Cedarville is a dry town! No beer tonight!

Chinese food right down the street before the stop light. Same side as hotel. New. Just opemned last week.

Moving’ On

We’re moving on today, heading to points East, maybe Cedarville or Yellow Springs, (both near Xenia) if we have enough leg. Looks like a beautiful day. High in the mid 70s. The wind will be with us until about mid day. Seems like we’ve been in a perpetual head wind since we left. We went to the grocery store last night. There was one section of road about a mile long that we actually had the wind behind us and we were well over 20 mph! That was fun. For a second.
