Day 5 departing Millersburg

We are stalling hoping it will warm up some. We do not have that far to go but it will be hilly. It is 11 a.m. and we are just about ready to pedal away. First stop Walmart! We need to get some sweatshirts. We both have windbreakers but that will not be enough.

It is 43 degrees and cloudy. BUT the WIND SHIFTED! It is blowing out of the NORTH! It will be pushing us for the first 10 miles then will be crossing us as we are headed west. 16 mph sustained and gusting to 26. AND we are camping tonight. burrrr

You can check out our story and map of today’s route from when we rode it last year. click here

See ya!

Day 4: Millersburg, Zero Day, pm

A perfect day! The best scrambled eggs, ever. This place should be named scrambled egg inn. Back to sleep…more scrambled eggs…back to sleep then the tub.

The salt water hot tub and swimming pool are fantastic. They make everything better. I was in that hot tub then the warm pool 25 time today. Floating like an angel. Perfecto! It stormed, or rained, all day and I could see the snapping flag, and threatening clouds, and the occasional Amish buggy from the hot tub. Nice!

Dryed off long enough to get the laundry going and get ready to walk into town for lunch…oh another storm…oh another nap!

When we finally walked to town we met up with our friend Jen who runs the Holmes County Trail. She clued us in on the construction on RT 62 that will block our way tomorrow. She said “turn right at the white fence at the bottom of the hill.” Funny thing is, we think we remember the white fence!

Then we met Nathan from Colorado. He was pedaling, fully loaded, and storms were threatening. We called out to him to see if he needed anything and he said, “I recognize you, I have been on your website!” He is riding the Ohio to Erie Trail south to north and left Cincinnati the same day we left Cleveland. He has been pushed by all the wind we have been facing head-on. We had lunch together. It was great. He has traveled and lived all over the world and chose to spend his summer off from teaching mechanical engineering bicycling in Ohio. He was riding a very cool belt bike. Guy took a photo—we will post it at next chance.

Tomorrow we are headed to Kokosing Valley Campground and Canoe in near Howard. I spoke to the owner who said they are packed (its Memorial Day Weekend) but they will make a place for us. Yay! Forecast is high 54, low 39, 20 mph wind, oh my!

Its cold outside now. Usually we need to move at first light to beat the heat. This time we will need to stall until it warms up. Wow! A tour of extremes! Yesterday as I was climbing Moreland Road in the heat I was dreaming of mailing away my long sleeves and long pants. Now I hope they are enough!

Hot tub and scrambled eggs!

Day 4: Millersburg, Zero Day

Wow, am I glad we got here when we did. We weren’t in our room 20 minutes last night when a thunderstorm rolled through. It rained off and on all night and it’s raining right now.
The salt water hot tub and pool here have worked miracles. I feel so much better than I did this morning. Looser and less pain. I think we are going to walk into town for some food and beer when the rain passes.
We also want to thank everyone that has purchased our trail guide so far. We have been overwhelmed by the response! It has put the wind at our backs, even though we have been battling such fierce headwinds. Thank you all!

Day 3: Millersburg

We are safe and sound in Millersburg. It was a twelve hour day in th saddle and sixty miles, half of which were on hilly Amish back roads, the other half trails, every mile into a 15 mph headwind. We are sitting in our chairs in our room and we still feel like we are moving. We have decided that tomorrow will be a Zero Day. They have a salt water pool and hot tub here :-)
We started the day back tracking the ten miles from our hotel to Canal Fulton to rejoin the trail. That went pretty well. The hills were actually a little fun because we were fresh.
In Canal Fulton, we happened across a canal tour boat being pulled by a team of horses. The boat was filled with grade school kids, so we got to talk to them as we road along side. After that, we were in Massillon pretty quickly.
We stopped at Ernie’s Bike shop to try to drum up some business and I ran into a new reporter for The Independant, a local paper. He interviewed us for a bit and took some photos. He said it will be out on the 24th, if I Remember right.
After that, we hit the Sippo Valley trail. It was hot and as we were crossing a bridge, Carol spied a little swimming hole down below? We took advantage like a couple of country school kids, if you know what I mean 😉
The dip really cooled us off for a bit, but the sky Was threatening, so we pedaled on. Eventually we got to Dalton and ate at the drive in. The sky was really scary by then and we had a 17 mile road route to cover. We were concerned, so we just jumped on our bikes and rode off. After a while the weather moved to the east of us, but we were getting tired. Along some of the back roads, we ran into some Amish and their horses were spooked by us. It was pretty undeserving, especially for the one buggy driver. We were as considerate as could be and found that the horses were ok when we stopped moving and just talked to them.
Finally we arrived at Fredricksburg, after that hilly road route. We stopped at Lem’s Pizza and Ice Cream and had a couple of cones. We were whipped by this point, but we knew we only had 10 or12 more miles to ride on the Holmes County trail. Th Holmes County trail is unique in that you share it with Amish buggies. It’s like an Amish high way. We did some of our best riding of the day on this trail into Millersburg because it was evening and the wind was starting to die down a little. We still had to draft to make it, but we were up over 14 mph consistently. It’s amazing what you can do without wind.
Tomorrow we are staying here to rest, because the next section of trail is also a road route and is very hilly. Plus there is a section along state route 62 that is narrow, two lanes, 55 and used heavily by semis, so that’s a little stressful.
Good night for now. It’s my turn in the shower…!

Day 2: I don’t know where.

Wow. Another trying day. It was so blasted hot and windy again. We were in a headwind all day and it was mid 80s. Right now we are safe and sound in a Best Western suite in a place without a name roughly 12 miles east of CanalFulton. I have the air condition in our room set at 65.
The Towpath trail is dirty and dusty and the vibration makes even the soles of your feet hurt. It’s a pretty ride though. We left Stow early trying to beat the heat, but to no avil. We took many breaks and drank lots of water, probably measured in gallons, between the two of us.
We stop in a tiny greasy spoon in Barberton, named Cissy’s, and bough some carry out burgers. It was inhabited by mostly half crazy retired local men and we heard a lot of stories as we chatted with them while we waited on our food. It was like something out of a movie. They helped themselves to more coffee from behind the counter and the very skinny young girl with too much mascara running the counter knew them all by name. She was very nice to us and fastidious in her work.
We left Cissy’s and rode our bike to the center of town where they have a large park, Lake Angela. Locals were feeding those pesky dang Canda Geese and the ducks. There were two swans also and a great blue heron in the middle of the whole noisy bunch of them begging for bread right along with the rest. Strange.

We wanted to take a nap after lunch, but decide that the weather was increasingly threatening and that we should move on.
As we pedaled south from Barberton, the trail crosses several bridges. These bridges generally have a little bump as you get on and off of them. It was hitting one of the bumps that Carol had her, um, crash.
Seems she hit the bump, which in turn caused her font pannier to to depart from her front rack, which in then caused the pannier to jam against her front fender, in turn jamming the fender aginst the front wheel, which in turn stopped the front wheel from actually turning, which in turn, turned over the bicycle.

Whew. I watched it all happen in slow motion. Carol was smart enough to grab the side of the bridge, which checked the full rotation of the bike. She’ just fine now, but we were both a bit shook up and she has some really great bruises on each thigh from her handlebars.
The repairs were made in about half an hour. We took a nice pic of her depositing the destroyed fender into a trash can.
We rolled on.
We stopped in Canal Fulton to charge up for our final sprint to the hotel. At Cherry Street Creamy, we had ice cream and then a hot dog. Our mission from there was roughly 12 mile up Portage road, up hill most of the way on a two lane road with some pretty aggressive traffic at 50 mph. We hung tough and our new gears really helped out. It was slow going, but we persevered and are here now. carol just walked in with some Dortmunders and we are going to order a pizza. If its gonna be this hot again tomorrow, we will need to make a new plan, as we are now miles from the trail.
Carol just said the guy at the front desk just saw some lightening, so I am glad we are indoors tonight!

Added by Carol:

The crash was no pain, just upsetting. One tiny flaw in a monumental and spectalar trail effort by Summit county. You need to ride to believe it.

We stayed across the street from Belden Mall at a Best Western which was nice. About 10 miles from the trail. There was also a  motel 6 and a microtel. Rolling hills a few steep ones. Probably not bad on a good bike day. It was 7 pm, 84 degees, Hot head wind.

We went there because the Hampton Inn Massillon was sold out.

Day 1, Stow Ohio

Made it to Stow. We started by tire dipping in Lake Erie at Edgwater Park. We had a couple of cute young girls in bikinis take our picture :-)

Today was HOT! Upper eighties. We can do a lot, but the heat really slows us down. We took a lot of breaks, sometimes just every few miles. At lunch, we changed out of our riding clothes into shorts and flip flops. We will be doing that again. A lot. It really helped to cool us down. Fortunately, the heat is only supposed to last just one more day.

Tomorrow we will head to Massilon, taking our time, trying to beat the heat again.

My poor brand new IGotABike.com jersey. Today I spilled pop on it, Mac and cheese, got bicycle grease on it and dripped purple Popsicle all over it. I’m such a pig!

The Start of the 2013 Tour

Well, it’s about Noon and we are FINALLY ready to hit the trail! We had a few last minute glitches that kept us from leaving on our planned day. Saturday we were all set to leave. We had the trail guide finished and we were testing it and uploading it to the site. One mouse click away and our server took a dump.
ReallY?
I was on the phone for the entire afternoon with tech-help. It was out for hours, so Saturday came and went.
So now it’s Sunday. As good as any day to leave, right?
Nope.
Our three day old air conditioning unit suffers a catastrophic failure. Had the thermostat set on 70 degrees, but it’s 77 in the house. Now it’s 77.5. Oops, now it’s 78. Dang, now the windows are open again.
Monday now. We finally get the A/C people to call us back and we set up an appointment for this afternoon. Fortunately, our best neighbor will let them in. (thx Linda!). We had to get it fixed as we couldn’t leave our pets and our house sitter up all that time without it.
Anyway…
We’re out of here today. Not sure where we’ll land, but I won’t be missing the barking dogs and the regular neighborhood hub bub.

Another Bicycle Adventure: “Wow, the Velodrome!”

The velodrome bikes are carbon, fixed gear, no brakes.

Couple of days ago we drove across town (yes we have a car) doing errands for our upcoming 2013 tour. A traffic jam inspired us to go a different way on and we stumbled across the Cleveland Velodrome. We saw it from a distance we both said in unison “what the heck is that?” We have been meaning to check it out since it opened in the fall 2012.

View of the Cleveland Velodrome from the street.

When we arrived the track was empty with just one rider resting. That was Bob and we immediately pounded him with questions. The bikes are mostly carbon frames, fixed gear and no brakes. To stay on the track up top you need to be going 35 mph. There is a 101 training course required. First timers and children are free. There are bikes to rent. Most of the users are road racers. (see Lakewood Criterion)

The Cleveland Velodrome members were very impressive and helpful. Bob, behind, in blue, answered dozens of our questions.

Soon other cyclist started showing up and we stood slack jawed for two and half hours completely forgetting our to do list.
We learned that this is not for us as riders but look forward to spectating. They have an infield with food, beer and music. The races are on Thursday and Saturdays.

One of the two spectator stands at The Cleveland Velodrome.

Bob told us that there is a gear war among the regular users with a constant upgrade in bikes, wheels, gears and more. He explained they do a number of laps with a gear then stop and change to a different gear and do another set, same with wheels.

Members of the CASE racing team arrived on road bikes and we watched them transfer their pedals to the velodrome bikes. They are in the video below.

A family arrived from Boston extremely excited to ride. The tiny gray haired woman was a cat 3 racer and brought her own steel framed velodrome bike (pink!)
It was all very fascinating and we cannot wait to go back.

In the video below Cleveland Velodrome member Bill does a power house standing start. Wow!
